Ride with Josh: Pedaling for a Cause

Sterling Simms, Vice President of A&R at Columbia Records, has partnered with elite cycling brand Rapha to support City of Hope’s commitment to treat, and ultimately cure, diabetes in all its forms. The Fourth Annual Ride with Josh cycling event is named in honor of Sterling’s late brother, who lost his battle with diabetes at age 19. Presented live at Rapha Los Angeles and virtually, Ride with Josh encourages cyclists at all levels to ride in support and join City of Hope’s journey towards finding a cure for this chronic condition that affects 1 in 10 Americans.

An Intimate Conversation with Sterling Simms

In an exclusive interview, Sterling Simms opens up about the deeply personal motivation behind the Ride with Josh event, his role in the music industry, and the profound bond with his late brother that continues to inspire him.

Interviewer: Sterling, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Can you share a bit about your brother and how his memory drives the Ride with Josh event?

Sterling Simms: Thank you for having me. Josh was more than just my brother; he was my best friend, my confidant. Losing him to diabetes when he was just 19 was a devastating blow. He had such a zest for life, a passion for music, and a love for adventure. Ride with Josh is my way of keeping his spirit alive and fighting for a cause that’s so deeply personal. It’s a way for me to honor his memory and make a difference in the lives of others who are battling this disease.

Interviewer: It sounds like Josh was an incredible person. How has your relationship with him influenced your work in the music industry?

Sterling Simms: Josh was always my biggest supporter. He believed in me when I was just starting out, and his belief in me gave me the strength to pursue my dreams. In my role at Columbia Records, I try to channel his positivity and determination. His memory drives me to not only strive for excellence but to support and uplift the artists I work with. It’s about creating a legacy that he would be proud of.

Interviewer: The Ride with Josh event has grown significantly over the years. What can participants expect from this year’s ride?

Sterling Simms: This year, we’re really focusing on community and inclusivity. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, we want everyone to feel welcome and part of something bigger. The Santa Monica ride is going to be spectacular – the views, the camaraderie, the shared goal of supporting City of Hope. And for those who can’t join us in person, the virtual option allows people from all over the world to participate and make a difference.

Interviewer: What message do you hope to send to people considering joining the Ride with Josh?

Sterling Simms: I want people to know that every pedal stroke counts. This event is more than just a ride; it’s a statement of solidarity, a commitment to finding a cure for diabetes. By joining us, you’re honoring Josh’s memory, supporting those affected by diabetes, and contributing to a future where this disease is a thing of the past. Let’s ride together for a cause that truly matters.
