Dinner and a Movie: Fun in Acapulco
Aug. 20. Take a trip to Catalina Island Museum to enjoy a delicious dinner by acclaimed Orange County chef Diego Velasco (pictured) with a fun Elvis Presley movie. This year, attendees can watch Fun in Acapulco from 1963 and chef Velasco will be serving up a specialty menu of shrimp ceviche tostadas, smoked chicken enchiladas, cochinita pibil (Yucatecan slow-roasted pork) and more. Las Cafeteras at Jerry Moss Plaza
Aug. 21. Head over to The Music Center’s Jerry Moss Plaza on Saturday to watch a special performance by L.A.-based folk and roots band Las Cafeteras. Known for their musical fusions of Afro-Mexican rhythms and pulsating electronic dance beats, Las Cafeteras will debut new songs and remix old favorites. Aug. 22. Calling all pizza lovers! Pizzeria Vittoria chef/owner Kyle Jacovino joins Caitlin and Daniel Cutler at Ronan for a one-night only pop-up experience to bring a taste of Savannah, Georgia to L.A. Jacovino, whose slow-dough approach has garnered national attention for Pizzeria Vittoria, will offer a selection of antipasti, pizzas and cannoli. Open. Winston House brings live music and nightlife back in the heart of Venice. Box of Hope at The Wallis
Aug. 19-21. Versa-Style Dance Company makes its Wallis debut with a three-night live engagement of its latest hip-hop dance-theater production, Box of Hope, on The Wallis’ outdoor stage. An evening-length work, Box of Hope explores themes that deal with the inequalities in today’s volatile social climate—specifically within underserved communities—through the lens of the sounds of Motown. 8 p.m. $35, are on sale now. Gabriella Sanchez’s Partial Pictures
Opens Aug. 22. The Museum of Latin American Art presents the first solo museum exhibition of Partial Pictures by Gabriella Sanchez, one of the most relevant, young, and exciting Latina artists in the contemporary L.A. art scene. This exhibit brings together 17 works of art that include paintings, sculptures, installation, photographs, and video art, which represent her artistic practice during the last years and features never-before-seen artworks. Stained Glass from Gothic to Street Style Exhibit
On View. Forest Lawn Museum welcomes guests to explore the first comprehensive Judson Studios exhibition, which shines a new light on contemporary and historic stained glass. Founded in 1897, the L.A.-based studio has been a leader in the field of stained glass for more than 120 years. This exhibition includes nearly 100 original stained glass artworks, preparatory drawings, archival photographs, oil paintings, and watercolors, many of which have never before been exhibited.
