Pre-concert lecture at 7pm by KUSC's Jennifer Miller Hammel Violin luminary Daniel Hope returns with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra to reveal the charisma of American music in a program named after his new album, America. This concert celebrates our country’s most recognizable tunes from across the 20th Century, including Copland’s iconic “Hoe-down” from Rodeo and “At the River” from Old American Songs; Gershwin’s Song Suite featuring “I Got Rhythm” and “Summertime”; Barber’s Adagio for Strings; music by Duke Ellington and Florence Price; highlights from Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera; and Echorus by Philip Glass. Overview

Pacific Symphony in collaboration with Farhang Foundation welcomes Grammy-nominated musician and composer Kayhan Kalhor to the stage for our annual Nowruz celebration. Kalhor is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso on the kamancheh (spiked fiddle), who has been instrumental in popularizing Persian music around the world. A native of Iran, born in the Kurdish city of Kermanshah, he was a musical prodigy who travelled Iran to perform and explore the music of its many regions.

Pre-concert festivities in the lobby include traditional musicians and a Haft-Sin display. Image magnification (IMAG): During the performance, close-ups of the orchestra musicians, conductor and guest artists will be projected onto the big screen above the orchestra.

Overview

Pacific Symphony in collaboration with Farhang Foundation welcomes Grammy-nominated musician and composer Kayhan Kalhor to the stage for our annual Nowruz celebration. Kalhor is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso on the kamancheh (spiked fiddle), who has been instrumental in popularizing Persian music around the world. A native of Iran, born in the Kurdish city of Kermanshah, he was a musical prodigy who travelled Iran to perform and explore the music of its many regions.
Kalhor is an original member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and he continues to compose for and tour with the group. He has been nominated for three Grammies and 2017 was awarded a Grammy with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. The festive program also features vocalists Sussan Deyhim and Azam Ali as well as dance by Tara Ghassemieh. Music Director Carl St.Clair shares the podium with guest conductor Shardad Rohani. A traditional festival that marks the beginning of spring, Nowruz is a time to celebrate the rebirth of nature and wash away the past. Celebrate the Iranian New Year with Pacific Symphony!
