Get ready to step into the vibrant world of Frida Kahlo, brought to life through dance in “Frida.” This captivating ballet, crafted by the genius minds of Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and British composer Peter Salem, takes you on a wild ride through the extraordinary life of the iconic 20th-century Mexican artist. We’re talking the whole enchilada – from her bold refusal to let adversity dull her sparkle, to her fearless battle against societal norms, her tireless advocacy for women’s rights, and those world-renowned self-portraits.
Using dance as a brush, Ochoa vividly paints the canvas of Kahlo’s life, echoing her “expressive surrealism.” Prepare to plunge into the deep sea of Kahlo’s solitude, explore her complex relationship with Diego Rivera, and celebrate her bisexuality and her masterful self-image crafting.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! The Music Center is pairing this exciting ballet with its second dance film festival, produced in collaboration with Dance Camera West. Calling all Southern California dance filmmakers! This is your chance to submit films that mirror themes of self-portraiture and autobiographical dance, inspired by Kahlo’s life and art. So, are you ready to dance the Kahlo way?
