Circus Vargas
Through Feb. 27. Jon Weiss of CBS’s Amazing Race is the ringmaster of an all-new Circus Vargas show featuring some of the world’s greatest circus performers including trapeze artists, jugglers, acrobats, death-defying stunt performers and of course, lots of world-class clowns. Recently featured in the 20th Century Fox motion picture Water for Elephants, Circus Vargas is a classic American circus, including a real big-top tent. Russell Lecture
Feb. 23. Known for his arresting films and dynamic gallery installations, British artist Isaac Julien will be speaking about his work at the Musuem of Contemporary Art San Diego’s annual Russell Lecture. Julien’s most ambitious project to date, Ten Thousand Waves, is a stunning nine-screen installation that weaves together three stories from China’s ancient past and present. Several photographic stills–including two that have never been seen before–as well as a single-screen projection will be shown alongside the installation. Culture & Cocktails: Echoes of the Past and Dyeing Elegance

Feb. 24. Classic IMAX films from the Fleet’s archives are paired with current hits for a full night of entertainment every Friday. This Friday, catch back-to-back showings of “Dolphins,” the Academy Award-nominated film that takes viewers under the water from the dazzling coral reefs of the Bahamas to the wind-swept seas of Patagonia, and “Rescue,” a documentary focusing on the various efforts that come together in times of natural disaster to help those in need. Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway

This world premiere opera based on Herman Melville’s 19th century literary masterpiece explores the lethal power of obsession and the need for human connection in an increasingly multicultural world filled with mysterious encounters, exotic characters and one man’s quest for a white whale that leaves death and destruction in its wake. Through Feb. 26. Aaron is smart, privileged and liked by everyone. Iskinder, his college roommate, is modest, unconnected and comes from a middle-class immigrant family. Soon the best of friends, Aaron takes Iskinder under his wing, sharing his world of favors and fortune. But the safe haven of college only lasts so long and once in the real world, Aaron is thrust into a terrifying situation without his familiar safety net. As the tables turn and he is forced to rely on an accused felon’s connections to keep him safe, both Aaron and Iskinder have to rethink the meaning of friendship and where loyalty has its limits.
