Cal Tri returns Nov. 1 with multiple distances and ways to participate around the Back Bay. The Back Bay gets an early start on Nov. 1. Swimmers, cyclists and runners return to Newport Dunes for the 2026 Optimism Cal Tri Newport Dunes, a morning built around finish lines, returning athletes and the people who help make race day work.
The event is in its 48th year, with more than 1,400 athletes already registered when organizers issued their October announcement. It also serves as the Cal Tri Events National Championship, drawing competitors from multiple states and abroad.
Participation is broader than a single full triathlon. Organizers describe 12 options across Olympic and sprint distances, including triathlon, run-bike-run, swim-bike, swim-run, individual swims and 5K or 10K runs. That variety gives prospective entrants a reason to inspect the actual race menu before assuming the event requires all three disciplines.

The swim and run portions take place within Newport Dunes, while the cycling route follows Back Bay Drive and Eastbluff Drive. Volunteers support the operation, with UC Irvine Sports Medicine Club and UC Irvine Sailing & Rowing among the groups benefiting from donations connected to their service.
For readers looking to take part, check current registration and volunteer openings directly with the organizer. Choose an event suited to existing preparation, rather than letting the approaching date make the decision. Supporters should review the parking and access information as carefully as athletes; a race course changes how a familiar waterfront functions for the morning.
