Lake views, a telescope and a weekend with my mom offered a preview of the slower days that make Big Bear worth returning to in autumn. The telescope was the detail that stayed with me. A few weeks ago, my mom and I checked into Arkouda Stays’ Studio Polaris Premium Suite in Big Bear, where the view stretched across town toward the lake. After dark, looking up became part of the stay.
Our visit came before the fall color, but it made a convincing case for returning when the evenings cool and the trees begin to turn. There was coffee in the Village, pizza at Saucy Mama’s and ice cream along the way. Back at the suite, a fireplace and a view gave us good reasons to leave room in the itinerary.

A Mountain Stay With a Different Perspective

During our stay, the Studio Polaris Premium Suite paired a king bed and fireplace with the feature I appreciated most: the outlook. Seeing the town and lake together gave the room a sense of place. The scenery was something to spend time with, from the changing daylight to the stars above the horizon.
The telescope encouraged that attention. Away from the stronger glow of Los Angeles, the night sky felt easier to appreciate. Clear skies and moonlight still determine what visitors can see, but having a telescope available made stargazing an inviting part of the evening.
Traveling with my mom also made the location useful. The Village was a few blocks away, close enough to make a coffee or food stop part of the day without turning it into a separate expedition.
Coffee, Pizza and Time in the Village
Big Bear’s downtown, known as the Village, concentrates much of its small-town appeal along streets lined with shops and restaurants. It is a place to browse between meals, with the surrounding mountains keeping the setting distinctly alpine.
We stopped for coffee at The Copper Q, a café and culinary shop on Pine Knot Avenue. Espresso drinks, baked goods and kitchen retail give it the feel of a coffee stop with something extra to explore. At Saucy Mama’s Pizzeria, also on Pine Knot Avenue, the draw is straightforward: handmade pizza in a casual setting suited to families and hungry visitors. Why Return in Fall
Autumn adds another reason to get outside. Along Castle Rock Trail, pine and oak forest leads toward boulder outcroppings and broad views of Big Bear Lake. As deciduous trees change color, their leaves break up the evergreen canopy. The lake remains part of the fall itinerary, too. Kayaking, paddleboarding and scenic boat outings can offer a different perspective on the shoreline when weather and seasonal operations allow.
