Foie Gras Is Back on San Diego Menus

foiegrask4140Foie gras is back on the right side of the law in California and chefs, foodies and adventurous diners can now sink their teeth into the controversial yet now-legal liver. Here are some of the best restaurants to fill up on foie gras in San Diego.

Kitchen 4140
Though not an every-day menu item, Chef Kurt often loves highlighting foie gras as a seasonal special, or as one of the stars in his prix fixe Chef’s Whim Dinner. Kitchen 4140 also recently hosted a Welcome Back Foie Gras dinner with a collaboration of San Diego chefs to celebrate the delicacy. Kitchen 4140’s farm-to-table cuisine brings a fresh twist to the San Diego restaurant scene with the goal of nourishing guests, the community and the earth, and Chef’s approach to sustainability means using fresh and local ingredients, including herbs and vegetables from their on-site garden. S & M: Sausage and Meat
Sister restaurant to Slater’s 50/50, S&M brings the meat to the table with exotic offerings. In addition to their foie gras, diners can find housemade sausages and charcuterie (including python, venison and iguana). The goal of the meat-centric cuisine is to “inspire a sense of adventure.” 4130 Park Blvd., East Village, 619.344.2177. slaters5050.com

Comun Kitchen and Tavern
Within minutes of the ban lifting, Chef Chad White had foie gras back on his menu as a special. White mentioned his ever-evolving menu will have foie gras tostadas available as specials for diners-in-the-know. 935 J St., East Village, 619.358.9707. comunsd.com

Bertrand at Mr. A’s
For restauranteur Bertrand Hug, foie gras is particularly special as he grew up on a farm in France that specialized in its production. At its penthouse location with views of San Diego, Bertrand at Mr. A’s serves the specialty as a torchon with raison walnut toast, candied tangerines and poached pears. 2550 Fifth Ave., Bankers Hill, 619.239.1377. bertrandatmisteras.com
