A Blue Hawaiian at happy hour? Light and airy popcorn shrimp followed by a spam quesadilla? How about a Sunday volleyball BBQ?
New to the Hollywood block, in the Egyptian Theatre courtyard—just steps from Hollywood & Highland—is Maui and Sons, which brings a little bit of the beach to the heart of Hollywood. Step into an inland beach oasis, and pull up a chair at the tiki hut bar, communal surfboard, or outdoor patio. It seems like happy hour all night long with $6 tropical cocktails and $3 draft beer. You can sip anything from the aforementioned Blue Hawaiian (Don Q Cristal rum, Haute vodka, blue curacao and pineapple juice), to a Surf Zombie (three types of rum, apricot brandy, an array of juices with a float of 151). Keep the night going with an order of Lava Wings, which sports a secret blend of jalapeno, Siracha, Thai bird chili and chipotle; popcorn shrimp are battered in a light tempura and tossed in Japanese-style spicy mayo, while the Maui cheese fries take fried potatoes to the next level with pickled onions and “woo-tang” sauce. For larger appetites, “The Duke” is a burger with a twist (think flavors of ginger and hoisin blended into a chuck burger, glazed with house teriyaki, topped with a pineapple, spicy mayo, cheese any cayenne candied bacon). Huli Huli tacos are lighter boasting grilled mahi-mahi, guacamole, coleslaw and salsa, while the Cosmic Bowl is a nice vegetarian option with stir-fried seasonal vegetables and tofu marinated in teriyaki.
On Sundays the party continues with a weekly volleyball BBQ. For, $5/pp, guests can participate in a volleyball game with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Winning teams get a free round of shots.
