Table Talk: New Nueva in Venice

Hamachi and uni at Nueva

L.A. Food News

Chefs Vartan Abgaryan of Yours Truly and Mesraim Llanez of Guerilla Tacos launch contemporary cantina Nueva in Venice, presenting modern Mexican fare—hamachi and uni with local citrus, charred peanuts and fresno chile; Mediterranean octopus tacos; and yellow corn mole with roasted squash, squash puree and summer succotash—in a beautiful new space in Venice designed by restaurateur Jared Meisler. Inside is a zinc/titanium alloy bar, skylights and a red oak/muted linen banquette. But for now, dine-in is on a colorful patio—with faded red, blue and yellow metal chairs, navy blue and white striped banquettes and a tropical landscape of agave, anthurium, ginger, and palms—and on an additional patio in a converted parking lot. There’s brunch on weekends. Adam Fournier (most recently of NoMad) oversees cocktails such as the Clarified Paloma with blanco tequila, mezcal, clarified grapefruit, agave, mineral water and ice spear; agave alternatives Sotol, Bacanora and Raicilla inspire their own cocktails. nuevavenice.com
