Esa-Pekka Salonen’s natural tendencies make him an ideal interpreter of French music, whose aesthetic consistently values color, lightness and transparency. His City of Light festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall features 20th- and 21st-century masterworks, among them Ravel’s Mother Goose, enhanced with a new multidisciplinary installation, and Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande, for which Salonen has received ecstatic reviews: “… among the finest achievements of Salonen’s principal conductorship” (The Guardian). Los Angeles Philharmonic dates include Jan. 23 and 30 (youth concerts), Feb. 12-14 (Mother Goose), Feb. 19 and 21 (Pelléas et Mélisande) and Feb. 23 (chamber music). A St. Louis Symphony program Feb. 2 features music by Olivier Messaien. 111 S. Grand Ave., downtown, 323.850.2000. laphil.org
