The Evolution of Stephan Jones Studio: Welcome to STOCK Studio

Stephan Jones Studio has transformed into STOCK Studio, a 2,000 sq.ft high-design retail space in West Hollywood. Launched on July 12th, this space on Santa Monica Boulevard showcases Jones’ multifaceted interests in design, art, and craftsmanship. Originally founded in Chicago in 2007, the studio has completed exceptional projects across the country, from San Francisco to New York City. Now based in Los Angeles, Jones rebranded the studio to reflect its evolution and expanded focus.

STOCK Studio: A New Identity

In July 2023, STOCK Studio was born, bringing in a curated collection of unique vintage pieces, particularly from Northern France and Belgium. “STOCK Studio’s storefront is an extension of my personal space, an outlet to share exceptional objects with the world authentically,” shares Jones. The studio also features emerging artists and design talents, offering items ranging from $30 hand-poured candles to $24,000 oak tables.

A Creative Space

STOCK Studio not only serves as a showroom but also as a creative hub for the team to work on client projects. The space offers a range of unique pieces and supports emerging artists, making it a vibrant part of the Los Angeles design community. Stephan Jones and his husband, Arthur Redman, add personal touches, including homemade cookies for visitors.

An Creative Conversation with Stephan Jones

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Stephan Jones, who shared his insights on the studio’s evolution, the importance of curated collections, and his dedication to supporting emerging talent.

Interviewer: Stephan, congratulations on the launch of STOCK Studio. What motivated you to rebrand Stephan Jones Studio to STOCK Studio, and how does this new identity reflect the evolution of your business and creative vision?

Stephan Jones: Thank you! It was important to me to establish a distinct, easy-to-remember identity that does not pigeonhole the business. This space is not only home to my interior design practice but also allows me to express my point of view as a creative and share that with the public. Stock is a noun, adjective, and a verb; it is multifaceted and reflects a more complex identity than the original name of the business.

Interviewer: STOCK Studio features a curated selection of unique pieces, particularly from Northern France and Belgium. Can you share more about the process of selecting these items and what makes these regions special for mid-century design?

Stephan Jones: I have always been interested in furnishings and objects with great lines and a distinct design that establish gravitas in a space. I began acquiring the furnishings we now have several years ago when I started exploring the design resources and markets in northern Europe and Italy. These pieces come out of the traditions and design history of the decorative arts found throughout Europe, but especially in Northern France and Belgium. I love the quality of craftsmanship and experimentation with materials which came out of European furniture design, most notably in the 20th century. My most recent obsession has been pieces by Maison Regain from the ’60s and ’70s, which are all fabricated from solid elm and simply express the solidity and beauty of the material. Our acquisitions follow no pattern; when I see something interesting or unique and it speaks to my design soul, it finds a home with me, whether it is an old crusty factory table or fine ceramics.

Interviewer: You describe STOCK Studio’s storefront as an extension of your personal space. How do your personal tastes and experiences influence the pieces you choose to feature and the overall ambiance of the studio?

Stephan Jones: I would not have acquired these pieces if they did not speak to me in some way. When sourcing, I let my instincts and sensibilities be my guide. Coming up through the industry, I was exposed to fine craftsmanship and the role of antiques and vintage furnishing in good design. Objects endure and can evoke feelings; it is my hope that when you visit my studio, it feels genuine, grounded, and that it inspires and engages your senses.

Interviewer: STOCK Studio proudly features emerging artists and design talent. How do you select the artists and designers you showcase, and why is it important for you to support and promote new talent in the creative community?

Stephan Jones: I feel like creatives can be very misunderstood and that the path to a life based on engaging those talents is not clear nor is it highly valued. In my own background, I was provided with opportunities and encouragement that propelled me forward. It is my hope that I can do the same for others, and it’s a way to give back to the community. In that regard, I am on the Board of Governors of Otis College of Art + Design, where I have encountered some super-talented ceramicists which I am featuring in the shop currently.

Looking Ahead

With luxury residential projects nearing completion in Los Angeles and San Francisco, including a notable apartment in Sierra Towers, STOCK Studio is set to continue influencing the design landscape. Jones is excited about the studio’s future, aiming to inspire and connect with the broader design community.
