During the 18th century, many in the upper echelons of societies throughout Europe were Francophiles, imitating French fashions of dress and furniture in their daily lives. Paris: Life & Luxury, currently at the Getty Center, re-creates a day in the life of a Parisian townhouse during the mid–1700s, reimagining through art and material culture the lifestyle of the elite Parisians who made their city the fashionable and cultural epicenter of Europe. Inspired by the Getty’s extensive French decorative arts collection and access to French illustrated books at the Getty Research Institute, the exhibition brings together 160 objects, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, lighting fixtures, books, textiles and an exceptionally rare survivor: a bed with side curtains and a “flying” canopy suspended from the ceiling.
