In the awards-season favorite film Black Swan, actress Natalie Portman and her ballet-dancing co-stars don impeccably crafted tutus by L.A.-based couture designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. A selection of these sumptuous costumes are displayed alongside pieces from Rodarte’s spring 2010, fall 2010 and fall 2008 collections in the exhibition Rodarte: States of Matter, open through June 5, at MOCA Pacific Design Center. Rather than being shown on mannequins, the pieces are displayed off-figure to show the sculptural quality of the sisters’ designs.
