The exhibition, running at UCLA’s Hammer Museum through May 6, marks the first public presentation of a selection from the extraordinary gift, valued at more than $30 million, that longtime museum supporters Susan and Larry Marx pledged to the Hammer in 2007. Featuring more than 150 works by 109 artists, including Willem de Koonning, Eva Hesse, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, Agnes Martin and Cy Twombly, from the post-World War II period, the collection is made up primarily of works on paper but also includes paintings and sculpture. Grounded in abstract expression, it branches out into more concrete concerns with geometry (Ellsworth Kelly, Blinky Palermo), compulsive repetition (Kusama), quasi-figurative forms (Hesse, Sigmar Polke), conceptual art (Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt), expressive lyricism (Brice Marden, Twombly) and the pop-like resolution of the line into typography (Ed Ruscha). 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, 310.443.7000, hammer.ucla.edu
