“Nine symphonies, three weeks, two orchestras, one conductor” is how the Los Angeles Philharmonic bills its Mahler Project. Marking the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s death, music director Gustavo Dudamel leads the L.A. Phil and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in all of Mahler’s completed symphonies Jan. 13-Feb. 5 at Walt Disney Concert Hall, then repeats the cycle with both orchestras in Caracas, Venezuela. “My love affair with Mahler started when I was a boy and was given a recording by my uncle,” Dudamel says. “The first big symphonic piece I conducted at age 16 was Mahler’s First Symphony. The works of Mahler have a very special place in my heart, and to have my two families, the L.A. Phil and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, perform the complete cycle in both L.A. and Caracas is, for me, a dream come true.” 111 S. Grand Ave., downtown, 213.850.2000. laphil.com
