In Big Bear Lake, where weekend traffic from Los Angeles thins into pine-lined roads and colder air, a new hospitality group is making its entrance with a quieter approach. Arkouda Stays has officially launched with the opening of Arkouda Cabins, a restored nine-cabin retreat that signals a different kind of mountain stay—one shaped by history, restraint, and a sense of place.
The property sits along Big Bear Boulevard, but its story begins in 1935. Originally known as Embers Lodge, it operated during a time when Hollywood studios enforced a “two-hour rule,” requiring actors to remain within close reach of Los Angeles. Big Bear Lake became a practical escape, and this property, in particular, drew names like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, and Howard Hughes—figures who came for proximity but stayed for the isolation the mountains offered.
“Travelers today are looking for places that feel authentic and unforced,” said Joseph Lontos, co-founder of Arkouda Stays. “This property was always meant to be a place to slow down and reconnect with nature. Our goal was to honor its history while creating a stay that feels timeless, not trendy.”
Arkouda Cabins Sets the Foundation for a New Hospitality Brand

As the debut property, Arkouda Cabins establishes the blueprint for what Arkouda Stays aims to build. With just nine individually designed cabins, the experience leans toward privacy and scale—something closer to a private mountain estate than a traditional hotel. Accommodations range from compact studio cabins suited for couples to a three-bedroom, three-bathroom layout designed for families and small groups.
The design avoids excess. Interiors are warm but restrained, letting materials and layout carry the experience rather than over-programming it. The limited number of cabins creates space between guests, reinforcing the idea that quiet is part of the offering.
Big Bear Lake as a Year-Round Escape

The timing aligns with broader travel behavior. Big Bear Lake has evolved beyond its winter identity, now drawing visitors year-round for hiking, lake access, forest trails, and seasonal snow. Its proximity to Los Angeles makes it a consistent fallback for short, destination-driven trips, especially as travelers move away from crowded resorts in favor of smaller, experience-led stays.
Arkouda Cabins fits into that shift—offering access without excess, and a setting that encourages guests to step outside rather than stay programmed inside.
What’s Next: Arkouda House in Big Bear Village

The launch of Arkouda Cabins marks only the first phase. Arkouda Stays is already preparing for its next project: Arkouda House, a hotel concept located in Big Bear Lake’s Village area, scheduled to reopen in 2026 following a full renovation.
Where Arkouda Cabins leans into seclusion and restoration, Arkouda House is expected to bring the brand’s design-forward approach into a more central, walkable setting—expanding the group’s footprint while maintaining the same core philosophy.
For Arkouda Stays, the approach is measured. Start small, stay intentional, and build outward from properties that already carry a sense of place.
