MOPA Turns 30
The Museum of Photographic Arts is celebrating its 30th year with a month-long calendar of events.
In honor of its 30th birthday on May 1, the Museum of Photographic Arts has released a month long schedule of celebratory events to help commemorate its three decades as a museum in Balboa Park dedicated to photography, film and video. The celebration launches on May 1 with $1 admission to the museum, as it was in 1983. Additionally, every visitor to the museum that day will be entered into a raffle for various photography related prizes, and the MOPA gift shop will be running a sale marking everything down to 83 percent of its regular price. The remainder of the first week, the original $1 pricing will continue, everything at the store will be marked down by 10 percent and everyone who makes a purchase will receive their choice of an Arnold Newman or Duane Michaels poster. Other events include behind-the-scenes tours of the collection storage area and library, special lectures, meet-and-greets, short film screenings and two-for-one admission for guests and their moms on Mother’s Day. The celebrating culminates with the opening of their newest exhibition, Pictures of the Year International, an award-winning array of photojournalism in categories ranging from sports to environmentalism.
