Artwork of Susan Graham On Display at Lux Art Institute

sugar-spun-guns-luxThe unexpected juxtaposition of fragile and ferocious is a signature of artist Susan Graham whose work is on display at Lux Art Institute.

Graham’s work is inspired by the American artifacts of her Midwestern upbringing: guns, trucks, lawnmowers and other iconic forms, which she painstakingly sculpts from delicate materials like sugar as a way to explore themes of anxiety and fear in Midwestern culture. This fall Graham is in residence through Oct. 6, at the uniquely interactive Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, which is dedicated to showing guests not only art objects but also the process by which those works are produced. Visitors will be able to watch as Graham creates a temporary installation inspired by a wallpaper pattern from her childhood bedroom, rendered entirely in sugar and porcelain. She’ll be in studio through Oct. 6. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 27. Lux Art Institute, 1550 S. El Camino Real, Encinitas. 760.436.6611. luxartinstitute.org
