“Oceans at Night” at Birch Aquarium
Opens Jan. 26. Sea life and nightlife combine at this new monthly series at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Leave the kiddos at home for this adults-only (21+) event celebrating the ocean’s mysteries and wonders after dark. R&B Block Party at Quartyard
Jan. 28. This isn’t just an R&B block party. It’s an “all decades” R&B block party, celebrating each decade of the genre every hour on the hour—from the soulful ‘70s to the ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s. Head to outdoor venue Quartyard for an evening of jams “that you just don’t get in the club no more.” Think: throwback tunes by artists such as Jodeci, Bell Biv Devoe, Tony! Toni! Miniature Golf Pop-Up at One Paseo
Jan. 28-29. Inspired to get your putt-putt on? In the spirit of golf (with the PGA’s Farmers Insurance Open taking place this weekend), One Paseo is hosting a pop-up, 18-hole miniature golf course on The Lawn behind Harland Brewing Company. Catch the golf tournament on Harland’s TVs while working on your own putting skills. Guests can also partake in a chipping game and enjoy music by a live DJ. First opened in 2012 in NYC (then expanding to Los Angeles and Miami), the Morano family’s Prince Street Pizza is known for its SoHo squares and Neapolitan-style round pies—incorporating Sicilian recipes and handcrafted sauces. Now pizza lovers can enjoy its famous fare at its new location in the Gaslamp. Marston House Museum
Open. Getting to visit this historical landmark is our kind of house call. Built in 1905 and named for George W. Marston (the “Father of Balboa Park”), the Marston House is the embodiment of the Arts & Crafts architectural movement. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house—nestled on five acres of landscaped gardens—was designed by renowned architects William Hebbard and Irving Gill. Spanish Village Art Center
Open. Established in 1936, this historical artist collective is an underrated Balboa Park gem—known for its old-world architecture and brightly colored tile walkways reminiscent of an actual Spanish village. Stroll among its working studios, where you’ll witness art in action. More than 200 local artists—whose mediums span painting, sculpture, jewelry design, glass, wood, metal, mixed media and more—can be found creating their latest masterpieces. San Diego Museum Month
Upcoming | Begins Feb. 1. Now in its 34th year (accruing 100,000 participants last year alone), San Diego Museum Month is back and bigger than ever. Presented by the San Diego Museum Council, the month-long event grants access to more than 60 museums, cultural attractions, historical sites, aquariums and gardens for half-off admission. Participants include The New Children’s Museum (pictured), myriad Balboa Park museums, MCASD, the floating USS Midway Museum and many more.
