Bake Sale Bakery & Cafe, the East Village’s Neighborhood Bakery
Home to hand-crafted breads, pastries, cookies, cakes and more, Bake Sale Bakery & Cafe is an East Village destination for breakfast, lunch and cooking classes—or just to satisfy that sweet tooth.
Step into Bake Sale Cafe & Bakery in San Diego’s booming East Village and instantly feel transported into a cozy neighborhood destination with the happy buzz of activity, chatter and the delicious smell of hand-crafted pastries, breads and their famous English muffins.
At the helm of the venture, proprietor Terryl Gavre describes the bakery as a “labor of love.” Having been in the neighborhood for just over a year, Bake Sale Bakery & Cafe continues to be a favorite daytime stomping grounds for locals and commuters, while also filling orders for local restaurants. Head Baker, Jenn Reinhart and her team have the pastry cases overflowing with cookies, cupcakes, breads, pastries and more by 7:30 a.m., but even before this time, loads of pink boxes leave the door for their wholesale clients. By 11 a.m., the lunch menu is available with standouts like egg salad sandwich on rye, grilled ham and gruyere on rye, and smoked turkey sandwich on peasant bread. Save room for one of their oversized cookies, house-made pop tarts or chocolate croissants for dessert.
The 1,200 square-foot bakery has a charming, airy atmosphere perfectly complemented by the decor with playful mis-matched china plates on the wall, exposed brick and vintage school chair seating.
Bake Sale also offers monthly baking and cooking classes with hands-on instruction from Chef Jen. The class includes all ingredients and tools, and plenty to taste and bring home or share. Recent classes have included “All Things Yeasted” and “Come Jam with Us” and the upcoming class schedule will feature “Cookies…Fun to Fancy,” “Pinterest-Perfect Birthday Cakes,” “The Great Pumpkin,” and “Cupcakes 101.”
